they spell it with a "C" there ;]

Here's an interesting fact -- how many of you reading this, knew that "Korea" is spelled as "Corea" in Korea? :]

You know, lots of my friends tell me that being an only child must be so great -- not having to ever need to share anything, or fight over toys/attention... and most of the time, I agree -- but the holidays can be a tough nut to crack sometimes. It gets just a little lonely. O'course, me being the chatterbox that I am, I usually talk nonstop to my mum -- but it's different, being around friends in college. :] I miss my classmates & bus buddies!

I miss my darlings Carmeny, Ever, Steffie, Tings, Winson, Kat, Ben & the rest of my bus buddies ... my lovely, insanely entertaining H1 ... laughing with Rameera & eating at fast food restaurants/bakeries with her until I'm close to throwing it all up again ... enjoying quality time with An Nie & Sara ... cooking up larger-than-life comic book plots with Ming-Ming (who happens to be having a blast in Hong Kong right now ;]) ... panic-attack-about-math text-messaging with Shern Ren ... barking out orders to Ming Yuen, my super-nice & cooperative sub-ed ... walking home with Nicky & yakking about all the nonsense there is in the world ... being attacked by ESL teachers on my cellphone (the ESL department is in charge of Winanga-li this year, that explains it! haha) ... catching a few chats with Tse Munnie (my bestest friend in the whole world!) in the corridors / bathrooms / random places ...

On the brighter side, though, I get to spend more time with Denise (my other bestest best friend in the whole world!!) during the holidays -- and she's like the sister I never had! Like today, she came over & lounged around after we sorted out some magazines she could use for her big presentation on Friday (about China being a threat/opportunity). All the best, De! You can do it! Knock 'em dead! ;D (Unfortunately, her Internet's temporarily paralyzed & she won't be able to read this ... hahaha ... but my ESP vibes should be strong enough.... heheh...)

And good ol' Nicky walked to my house in the blazing hot sun to lend me his copy of "To Kill a Mockingbird" -- yup, folks, I'm going to read that on my holiday, yay!!

Alrite, I'm going to go watch the series finale of Grey's Anatomy now ... so I just want to wish everyone happy holidays (SAM students) & good luck for your exams (A-Levels students)! :]

I'll be back next week or so, and until then -- I love all my friends!!! :P
Thank you for being the most wonderful people in the world!

Holiday Song

Lemon Tree [Fool's Garden]

I'm sitting here in the boring room
It's just another rainy Sunday afternoon
I'm wasting my time
I got nothing to do
I'm hanging around
I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens
and I wonder

I'm driving around in my car
I'm driving too fast
I'm driving too far
I'd like to change my point of view
I feel so lonely
I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens
and I wonder

I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see
is just a yellow lemon-tree

I'm turning my head up and down
I'm turning turning turning turning turning around
And all that I can see is just another lemon-tree

Sing! Da-da-da-da-dee-dup-dah...

I'm sitting here
I miss the power
I'd like to go out taking a shower
But there's a heavy cloud inside my head
I feel so tired
Put myself into bed
Well, nothing ever happens
and I wonder

Isolation is not good for me
Isolation
I don't want to sit on the lemon-tree
I'm steppin' around in the desert of joy
Baby anyhow I'll get another toy
And everything will happen
and you wonder

I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just another lemon-tree

I'm turning my head up and down
I'm turning turning turning turning turning around
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon-tree

And I wonder, wonder
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see,
and all that I can see,
and all that I can see......
Is just a yellow lemon-tree.

The Holiday Bug

Alrite - I admit it.

I was wrong.

The holidays haven't slowed down time at all! Seeing as I'm leaving in a couple of days, I have an annoyingly limited amount of time to accomplish all these tasks:

1. Winanga-li Editor's Note
2. Edit 5 events articles & choose pictures
3. Do BM Folio project on suicide

On a lighter note, Lee Ting helped me find out the identity of the mysterious Korean-American hottie! Now I am going to share the info with the rest of the curious female population:

Luckily Tings saw him in an advert on Astro. Hehe! =]

Besides internationally interest-provoking men, X-Men: The Last Stand has really, really caught my attention. After a substantial amount of google-time, I finally found a picture with all the cast members -- instead of having to upload individual shots! ;P

And my fine friend (pictured below) is one I can't wait to see on the big screen. I'm a sucker for angels. ;] Also mightily impressed by the advertising slogan.

Next up, we have... the Man of Steel! (I was going to post up Da Vinci Code stillshots, but all the photos I found were pretty lacklustre... so... skipped to Superman Returns! XD)

And here's a picture of my friends from London who are coming to M'sia in July this year! :] I can't wait for my Brit friends to meet my M'sian friends! And Karin is coming too (not in picture). I love Karin! She taught me bits and pieces of Spanish!

Interesting Pieces

Today is officially Day #2 of my midyear holidays!

I had a lot of fun wasting daylight - dug up old DVDs to watch, and lazed around in the living room watching Fantastic 4 (I know, I know, I'm almost a whole year late on watching that! XD) & rewatching Scary Movie 3! Hahahahaha! That movie still cracks me up! Fantastic 4 was awesome! Most of my friends' favourite character is Johnny Storm a.k.a. Human Torch, but mine's definitely Mr Fantastic himself! :D Torch is undeniably dashing, but Reed is such a sweetheart. Sighs.

The holidays are wonderful in the sense that I have so much more spare time on my hands than I usually have -- what with endless projects, deadlines, exams, homework, & the extra workload with Winanga-li; so the holidays now give me the gift of slowing down time. :P I even have the chance to read the newspapers properly now, or sitting down with storybooks (or watching DVDs) that I've been meaning to read for months -- like last night, I finally got started on a novel Kington lent to me sometime in March: Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal". I'm still in the 2nd chapter, and I'm already in love with the story! Hahah! Such a funny book! I'm also going to try and borrow "To Kill A Mockingbird" from Nicholas before I leave for Korea (1st June, yay).

Anyway, speaking about the newspaper -- there was a pretty worrying article I stumbled upon:

We can! We really can! So scary ... hahaha... it's a frightening thought, to be addicted to something, isn't it? But of course, that's due to my being somewhat of a control freak.. haha... and the thought of being out of control is just really, really chilling. Internet addiction is more probable than we ever imagined - check the statistics in the clipping.

One of the more youthful reasons for going to Korea - to see the Korean guys that so many M'sian girls are so crazy over. Hahaha! No la, just kidding. I love Korea because of the shopping. And the hotels. ;P But if you're wondering, the actor in the photo above is a fine example of what 1 in 100,000 Korean dudes look like .... don't believe everything you see on TV! In Korea, comestic surgery like blasto-something-majiggy (surgically getting double eyelids) is trendier than ear-piercing among Malaysian college students.

Besides, this guy in the picture - he's of mixed blood. Korean-American.

Stop the press! Donald Trump's recently welcomed a newbie into his famous family - Barron William Trump, born March 20, 2006. Gorgeous woman in the picture - Melania, Trump's wife. Already being called the "Golden Boy", he's got a golden stroller complete with its own chandelier. Golly gee. I'm guessing he's the real apprentice.

But all this makes me wonder, why do we never hear about the Trumps donating any of their "best" money in the world to Hurricane Katrina, 2005 tsunami, or the more recent Javan earthquake victims? I mean, Julia Robert donated a whopping US$10 mil in the aid of Hurricane K victims... what did Donald Trump do, besides producing a highly entertaining reality TV series & chipping in a couple of grand for some high-publicity charity auctions?

Alrite, other than thought-provoking pictures, I've finally had the time to actually read some of the gazillion forwards that I receive every day :P ... and I thought I'd share some of the funny ones with you. :D

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2006 WHEN ...

1. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.

4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.

6. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.

11. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

12. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

13. You are too busy to notice there wasn't a #9 on this list.

14. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list.

15. And now you're laughing at yourself.

Exam Week - Over!

Hey all! :)

I'm posting up another picture of Troy... due to high demand for more photos of my little hero... :)

I'm really glad the midyear exams have ended (although they didn't end on a very high note... T_T... Accounts can be such a pooper sometimes...) ... and now I'm going to write about each subject, like I always do after Common Tests! Haha! So cover the screen with your hand now, my fellow SAM-takers who don't want to be reminded of how ugly the papers were. Heh.

A picture of the "Men of H1" ... Mr Tong (our mentor) in light green. Seng Ming with the model pose, Jaya lurking behind him (hehe), Buford in baby blue, Hong Ting with the horizontal stripes, Collin behind him (remember Collin for his interesting boxers! Is it with one L or two in "Collin/Colin"?), Ho Sheng with the violin, and Mak with the cap & a very, very blur expression. Hehe, the men of H1!

Monday - Economics.
Some people think Econs is my favourite subject, or that it's a piece of cake for me, because of how incredibly lucky I was for the first common test -- but it isn't true! Econs is actually the hardest subject for me! The first topic was great, yeah, but the topics just got more complicated. Topics 4 & 5 are pretty much bummers for me. And I tend to panic & crumble under pressure -- which only makes matters worse. Like this time, I drew my 'boom period' graph wrong, because I drew the right one at first -- and then decided it looked wrong, and changed it. -_-"

Ever and I share the same Econs, Accts & Math lecturers! She's one my favourite bus buddies, hehe!

Tuesday - Mathematical Studies.
Ah... Math. After succumbing to math tuition, I'm a lot less worried about Math. However, although I'm pretty sure I didn't fail the paper -- I can't say I aced it. For example, I couldn't figure out how to find the area of the trapeziums, for one thing, and out of the whole optimisation question, I think I only answered the 'state y in terms of x' part. Bummer! :(

Wednesday - Malay.
That was the day I realized what a horrible, horrible sense of time management I have. Having spent the whole day before reading the first quarter of "Pindah" and studying the two novels, I had so much to write for Section B (Novels) and spent over an hour answering that one question! I even had to draw extra lines for every single line on the last page (I wrote a 3-page answer. OMG!)...

When I looked up and saw where the minute hand was pointing on the clock hanging in front of the classroom, I thought I was going to throw up. I had about an hour remaining, to answer half a dozen comprehension questions (and they don't ask for one-sentence answers, each answer actually should have about 4/5 sentences!) and another essay! For short, I rushed like mad and wrote in ugly handwriting. Finished with less than a couple of minutes to spare. >.<

Thursday - ESL (English as a Second Language).
Two essays to be written - one extended response (given 4 texts, synthesize the information & support your stand) entitled "Should home schooling be practised?" & a formal letter (two options - one on a little memo I didn't even understand or bother to read into, and the other on flash floods with a little blur photo provided).

For the extended response, I chose to argue against homeschooling (I found there were more points there... although I didn't really have a solid third point! eek...) & had to stupidly drag my conclusion a little longer because I left 3 pages blank in front for the ext response, and wrote my formal letter first. Then, my extended response wasn't long enough to even reach the 3rd page! Therefore, under pressure, I just dragged out the conclusion instead of drawing a line across the page. Was afraid Mrs Banu wouldn't appreciate Zorro imitations on the exam booklet. Hehe.

For the formal letter, I chose to write a letter to the editor of NST about flash floods. Got carried away and wrote a little too long. Whoopsie daisy. Should've stopped after complaining about poor drainage systems and inconsiderate citizens, but decided to round off by commending a made-up society ("Society of Concerned Citizens, or more popularly known as S.C.C., founded by Petaling Jaya resident Dr Kim Choy Tong" ... seriously, hahaha~) for immediate evacuation plans carried out, sending the rescue boat and all. Haha. I love fiction too much.

Friday - Accounting Studies.
Today. Studied so much Accounts yesterday, hoping to fare well in the SAQs. But nope. Forgot everything. Stoopid. Couldn't even finish the paper. Couldn't remember all my Accounting Conventions. Forgot how to count Gross Profit. Shite. Never mind lah. Too late, too bad, better to learn from mistakes. :(

And something scarier happened than zeros for some of my structure questions! Sara came 29 minutes late today, so she started the exam late! I wanted to turn back time for her :( ... she cried, too, I think.. but she was okay after the exam, because me & An Nie & Sara were hanging out in the library, playing on one computer & making a lot of noise (me being the central contributor! XD) ...

Funny thing happened, too. I found "The Kitchen God's Wife" by Amy Tan at the storybook-section, and texted my mummy to see if she wanted to read it -- then my mum CALLED me on my cell phone! Hahaha! In the library! Literally a boulder's throw away from the triangular-nosed librarian with the Sesame Street hairstyle at the counter!

I was trying to whisper to my mum on the phone, trying to tell her I'm in the library, but apparently I whisper louder than I talk. Then the librarian marched over and said "What's going on here?" like how the green trash-can monster in Sesame Street would say it. Hahahah! She wears so much bright-coloured eyeshadow that I can't resist laughing every time she comes and tries to scold me. I don't even remember how I reacted. I think I accidentally laughed at her eyes. Hahahahaha! Oh yeah, I remember now, I laughed & hastily opened the book and stared intently into it. So farney! Farney with a capital S for Sesame Street! XD

The librarians are really the cast from Sesame Street! Hahahaha!

Happy Holidays, everyone! =)

McPheever vs Hick's Soul Patrol

Yesterday morning, this year's American Idol was revealed.
And I must admit, I was surprised! I couldn't believe that a gorgeous, incredibly good singer like Katharine McPhee could get less votes than a grey-haired, old-soul vocalist like Taylor Hicks. But it happened! XD
American Idol 2006 -- Taylor Hicks!

Runner-up - Katharine McPhee. I supported her! :(

But oh well, she made it a long way anyway! :P

the next two weeks of nothing

Dear Diary,
My midyear exams have finally ended. Now, I want to wake up early in the morning & read textbooks for fun.

NOT!

Allow me to correct myself.

Dear Diary,

My midyear exams have finally ended. Now, I want to wake up in the middle of the day for the next two weeks, sleep at ungodly hours of the night, and waste every moment doing absolutely nothing!

That's more like it. ;P

Mid-Exam Blogging

I couldn't even make it for 2 weeks without blogging. >.<

The exam week's been a bit of a pain in the arse... and I'm definitely going to work harder after this exam's over (I know, I know, I've just typed out the most common thing teenagers say when they're doing badly for exams... i.e. "I'll work harder next time"...).

So I'm really taking it easy this time, by my standards, at least (hehe) but my friends still think I'm way too tense about the exams! Haha!

Seng Ming keeps laughing about how nervous I am -- maybe I gave that impression to my whole class when I arrived late for the first exam, rushed around & dropped everything on the way to my seat. -_-" Heh.

Voila! H1, class of 2006. *beams*

Seng Ming, Chiew Nee & a few other students spent quite a while at the Digi Photostat Shop across from college -- to do the whole class profile thing (which was due the next day... hahaha so much for SAM teaching its students not to do things at the 11th hour...) for the SAM yearbook. The class group photo above was taken by our mentor, Mr Tong, at one of the back stairwells. So, that's our first page. :D

Page 2.

From the top, model looking class reps Chiew Nee & Seng Ming... then outrageously fun Chinn Pei & Kang Yun... then youthful-looking Mingie & Jwu Wey .. then the sexy Rameera & nerdy moi (;P) ... then Jaya & Collin ... farney fellas ... Jilly & Mel, the life of H1... the sweet Cassey & adorable Sarah Goon ... then the page ends with Mak (a lot of girls in my class fancy him)& Keith (his famous quotes being "tul tul tul!" and "moo"....... hahah).

Page 3.

A teeny bit more serious, what with the looming presence of our lecturers' faces below. Heehee. Lovely An Nie & Sara Ong ... Li Shan & Laura :P ... Ee Leing & Jet Xin ... Sea Win & Man Yee ... Mary and Buford ... Hong Ting & Ho Sheng. Then the lecturers.

Alrite, I've got to stop here for the time being. It's 3pm and my exams actually haven't ended yet. I've still got ESL (English) paper tomorrow & Accounting Studies on Friday. T_T

Will add narrations for everyone properly once the exams are over! And stay tuned for photos of my classmates that you can't find in the yearbook! :D

Flinging With The Chickens

Nadia drove down to DJ yesterday! Waheyy! XD

De, Ping, Pei Lee, Nad, & I went to the Hainanese Restaurant for their famous chicken rice. Which I didn't have. I had the nasi lemak, and left half of it on the plate.

Had a sleepover at Denise's the night before, and her mum made a fantastic breakfast the next morning - bacon, eggs, toast, sausages, & goreng pisang! And I finally met Maiko! I adore her -- she's the coolest Japanese girl everrr! :D Can't wait to hang out with her more -- now that we've all shared a bed, I'm sure we'll be fast friends, hahah!

It was so funny when I gave Denise her present. I made a slideshow (took me 3 solid hours hahaa), and then got her to close her eyes while me & Maiko fumbled around with the CD and tried to run the file - but uh-ohh... it jammed De's comp! *sheer panic* At which point, the element of surprise was totally ruined because Denise had to open her eyes & reboot the dratted machine. Ah, technology! You baffle me!

Midterms. 'nuff said.

Denise says David uses this sign a lot = >.<

And I know it's actually the "midyear exams" and not "midterms" that're creeping up behind my back, but "midterms" just sounds better. *shrugs* Dunno why. Am in a permanently cranky mood because the midterms are coming up. In a single-digit amount of days, too.

Seng Ming just called me a blur sotong. Haha. That's new.

And -- back again to cranky mood.

Winanga-Li's moving too slowly. It's beginning to bug me about how all my workload is kinda clashing in this critical week before the midterms. My readers are probably hating me right now for reminding them about the midterms. They prolly want to kick my arse every time they read the word "midterms". Midterms midterms midterms! I hate exams!

I hate exams because I have to study hard for them. I don't mind the studying so much. But I hate the worrying and the stress. Ohhhh the STRESS!

Shern Ren says I go bonkers before *any* test.

I drive myself nutsss!

Mister Bob from Australia is coming on Tuesday to watch my BM class. Now because of that, we've gotta be all fancy during the lesson and give group presentations. And presentations on what? The two dullest novels ever written in the history of Malay novels. -_-" Which, incidentally, I haven't even read. And they're both being tested in the - darn that word - MIDTERMS.

Final Showdown: Teacher vs Student

Titles were meant to be exaggerated, right? ;P

Well, nothing much has happened this week -- considering school only reopened today, after our too-short 4-day break, and we've gotten back our Economics CT3 papers & still haven't heard about our LAN results or Math CT2.

Econs pretty much sucked big time in my class today -- this is probably the worst result all of us have gotten so far. Chiew Nee topped the class with a 29/35 (:P I knew she was going to hit the ceiling far beyond the rest of us! Her memory power is, like, wo-ow... sigh... but I don't think just memorizing would help everybody... Topic 4: Macroeconomic Objectives is in the syllabus just to mess with our heads, really!)... but all jokes aside, I'm really glad I passed the exam (passing mark is 46%), but I'm pretty disappointed that I didn't do as well as I would've liked (only managed a 26/35)... Tragedy has still befallen H1 -- almost half of the students in my class failed, I gathered, from the way Mrs Goh has been complaining about us.

Ah.. boring academic talk aside, I made a very interesting discovery last week! By closely scrutinising my classmates' personal blogs & comparing them to my class blog (http://www.h1isrocks.blogspot.com), I figured out who the mysterious h1moderator is! I was even more surprised when I found out my guess was correct, hehe, but now the problem is that all my classmates are constantly asking me, "Hey Sha-Lene, who is h1moderator? Tell la.. tell la... tell me, I won't tell anyone wan... tell la... come la... dun liddat la..."............ and I am getting a tad tired of saying, "I cannot tell la... sorry la, but at least you know that if you ever tell me a secret, you know I can keep it... hahaha..." or in worst-case scenarios: "Eh never mind la, not important oso" or "Wait ar, I go toilet".

Hmm... on another update, I've begun to find the joys of having a Friendster account! Well, actually, no -- I'm just trying to convince myself that Friendster is every bit as great as I thought it would be. The testimonials are fun, and posting up photos are fun, but I've already got a blog that can do all that. :( Ahhhh well.... at least now my friends will stop asking me to open a Friendster account. Heheh! :P

All righty... if you've read up to this far, it's time to turn this post into something a little juicier. Loyal readers deserve mild gossip! XD

You see, everyone in my class is now rushing against time to complete the ESL projects (stupid darndest things; if I were feeling kind enough, I'd prolly photocopy mine and give it to the juniors, haha!) -- and my ESL lecturer has turned our lessons these few days into "consultation hours" for the investigative study.

Personally, I still haven't finished my Annotated Bibliography & final report. *scowls sadly*

But anyway, today my teacher was in a pretty foul mood, and she snapped at three of my classmates as soon as class began, because they went up to her with the almost-finished projects to clear up some questions. She said that they've been hogging her for the past few lessons, and other students didn't have a chance to ask their share of questions. Basically, she was accusing those students of being selfish, inconsiderate, and overly-competitive at the same time. *whistles* I'm sure as hell glad that I was too lazy to move my arse to ask any questions immediately as she sat down at her desk, then.. hahaha... me & Meera were still shuffling aside notes from the previous class, heehornk... I guess sometimes it unbelievably pays to be a slowpoke?

The thing is -- although I respect my ESL lecturer for trying to stand up for the less-driven students (who didn't ask her questions in previous lessons), I feel that it isn't anyone's fault BUT the fault of those students who had questions, but did not persist to ask her. How can the fingers be pointed at my classmates who were, in fact, concerned enough about their schoolwork to bother asking questions in the first place? Since when did the school system turn to a system where students actually got reprimanded for trying to get a better job done? Of course, there are two sides to this story -- where students who are perhaps, too polite or too shy; who had questions -- didn't have the chance to ask them because they couldn't compete with pushier (sorry for the word of choice, heh ;P), more initiative-driven students.

Haha, besides pointlessly contradicting my own train of thought, something weird happened in class. I think my ESL lecturer can bring out the worst in my friends sometimes! And I'm not just being paranoid -- she's really hard to please, and is so tired of students' antics (not paying attention in class, everyone asking the same question over and over...). She's not, you know, a teacher like Sean (our class ex-mentor -- famously young, enthusiastic & motivated). Oh, by the way, for those of you who I told that he's 40, sorry -- he lied to us, it turns out he's, like, 27 this year! -_-"

Bottom line, though: I feel so sorry for Ming doll, who is, more often that not, the subject of our lecturers' nitpicking. Who says teachers aren't bias? Even Rameera gets the bad end of the unfairness sometimes!

Exhibit A: Mr Chong once went around the class checking if we brought our Math textbooks, and it so happened that neither Ming nor I brought them (just that one gallopin' day)! Then, he said gravely to us, "Bring your textbooks next time, or I won't let you into class". Not very accustomed to being told off by teachers nowadays, it didn't really strike a chord in me (I didn't recognise it as being picked on, so I just nodded, hahaha I'm quite stupid, really). But Ming recognised the unfairness of it! Some of our classmates were talking and not paying attention at all, and we were both following the lesson -- so why pick on the students who were listening? Why not those who were acting as if there was no teacher in class? -_-"

Exhibit B: ESL draft. Well, Rameera felt this one was marked really unfairly, although I kinda think that marks were awarded more on effort than on the actual presented work. I suppose that's good for students who are not so bright, but put in a lot of effort -- as opposed to smarter students who are somewhat lazier & didn't try so hard. Mrs Banu clearly awards marks based on subjective evaluation as well, and it's really hard to accept the fact that teachers aren't robots. XD
